People who are interested in learning about the growing and marketing of asparagus are invited to come to an Asparagus Twilight Meeting on Thursday, August 22, 2013 at 6:00 P.M. at the farm of Mr. Garnett Carr, 980 Flem Clayton Rd., Roxboro, NC, according to Carl Cantaluppi, Area Horticulture Agent for the NC Cooperative Extension Service in Granville and Person Counties.
Granville County Animal Shelter Adopt-a-Thon

Join us for a fun day at the Granville County Animal Shelter Adopt-a-Thon on Saturday, August 3rd from 11am to 4pm. There will be hot dogs, chips, and drinks available along with music from a DJ! There will also be a Rabies Clinic held during the entire event, so this is a great time to vaccinate your pets! And if you are looking for a pet, then this is the place to visit – we have lots of furry friends available!
North Carolina Small Grain Grower Association Assessment Referendum Vote Set For August 7, 2013

The North Carolina Small Grain Growers Association (NCSGGA) has announced that an Assessment Referendum will take place on August 7, 2013. Polling places will be located throughout the state in each county extension office. This assessment is for a six year period on all small grain (wheat, rye, oats, barley, rape seed/canola and grain sorghum). The North Carolina Board of Agriculture approved the request for this referendum at their meeting in Raleigh, NC on February 26th, 2013. The assessment will be ½ of 1 % on wheat, rye, oats, barley, rape seed/canola and grain sorghum for a six year period. This assessment period will begin on January 1, 2014 and will continue until December 31st 2019.
Master Gardener Program

People who would like to learn more about Horticulture; the art and science of growing plants, are welcome to participate in a new “Master Gardener” program, that will start on Wednesday, September 4 in Oxford, according to Carl Cantaluppi, Area Horticulture Agent for the NC Cooperative Extension Service in Granville and Person Counties.

Please take notice that the Berea Convenience Site located at 1534 Russell Road, Oxford, NC will be closed from July 15 to August 9, 2013 for NCDOT road improvements. Alternative locations for solid waste disposal and/or recycling include the Oxford Site at 6584 Landfill Road and the Butner Site at 2796 Old Route 75. The Operating Hours at these sites are Monday-Saturday 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Granville County Extension Volunteer Association Announces Recipients of Scholarship

The Granville County Extension Volunteer Association (EVA) announces three recipients of the $500 scholarship award for the 2013-2014 school year. Carla Light, the daughter of Nancy and Jerry Light of Oxford will attend University of North Carolina-Wilmington. Emily Grissom, the daughter of Lynn Etheridge and Mr. Jeffrey Grissom, both of Oxford, will attend Vance-Granville Community College. Both students graduated from J.F. Webb High School in June.
Michael S. Felts Named New County Manager

The Granville County Board of Commissioners is pleased to announce that Michael S. Felts has been named the new County Manager. He will assume his new responsibilities on July 1, 2013. Felts was the unanimous choice of the Board of Commissioners based on his educational background, credentials, experience and commitment to public service.
