New NC Democratic Party executive board!

Robert Fountain to be sworn in as Granville County Sheriff

Here’s a chance to see history in the making. Robert Fountain will be sworn in as the new Sheriff for Granville county — our first ever African-American sheriff.

The ceremony will be held tomorrow (Monday, Dec 5) at 6 pm – Northern Middle School Auditorium, Oxford. – 3144 Webb School Rd, Oxford, NC 27565

Watch your mailbox!

It looks like the Center for Voter Information is once again sending absentee ballot applications to all NC voters. If you see this white envelope in the mail, don’t throw it out! Please take a few minutes to fill out a form and request your absentee ballot. Or pass it along to another Granville County Democrat!

GCNCDP Treasurer Charlie Gunn has confirmed with our local Board of Elections that this form is correct and the return envelope is addressed properly for Granville County. Reverend Willie Darby of the local NAACP has also looked in this mailing and sent these tips and assurances:

To: GRANVILLE COUNTY NAACP MEMBERS, PASTORS, MINISTERS, CIVIC LEADERS, AND FRIENDS:

This is to notify you of the legitimacy of a 2020 STATE ABSENTEE BALLOT REQUEST FORM that you may have received by way of U. S. Mail. The form came from “THE CENTER FOR VOTER INFORMATION,” 324 S Wilmington St #417 Raleigh NC 27601.

If the form does not have any of your personal information already filled in then the form is okay/legitimate/authentic.  Please note that the form is merely for you to request an absentee ballot.THE FORM IS NOT YOUR BALLOT. IT IS JUST A REQUEST TO HAVE A BALLOT FOR THE NOV. 3rd ELECTION SENT TO YOU SO THAT YOU CAN COMPLETE THE BALLOT AND MAIL IT TO YOUR LOCAL BOARD OF ELECTIONS.

If you plan to be absent or want to vote by mail the form must be completed and mailed to the Board of Elections right away so that you can receive your ballot, complete it and return it to the Board of Elections in ample time.

Thank you,
Willie Darby

Granville Dems at the SEC

GCNCDP Chair LaHoma Smith-Romocki and Treasurer Charlie Gunn

The NC Democratic Party just held its 2020 winter meeting of the SEC (State Executive Committee). Democrats from across the state gathered to vote on our platform for 2020, meet candidates and other organizers, and receive training on tools and skills for building the party and getting out the vote.

Granville County was represented by LaHoma Smith-Romocki and Charlie Gunn (pictured). Young Dems leader Allie Akers was also there, but moving too fast to be captured on camera. We look forward to hearing about their experiences at our next general meeting.

Voter registration and outreach workshop Saturday (7/20)!

We will not hold our usual general meeting in July. Instead, we encourage all members to attend a voter-education workshop by You Can Vote:

Granville County Volunteer Training
Want to help voters learn about voter ID and make their vote count? Join us for a community training! We use evidence-based messaging, easy to read and understand election hand-outs and best practices for voter engagement. It is essential that our volunteers are prepared to communicate the new ID requirements in a manner that will not unintentionally disenfranchise voters. You will learn:

• Up-to-date voting laws 2019
• Election Schedule and what is on the ballot
• How to successfully educate and motivate voters to cast their ballot
• Voter Registration best practices
• How YOU can help citizens vote

Click here to register for this event!

Saturday, July 20, 2019, 10:30 AM to Noon
Richard H. Thornton Library 210 Main St Oxford, NC

NOTE: This workshop is a non-partisan event. All are welcome!

Important changes for 2019

Change is coming for the Granville Dems in 2019!

  • The Oxford office will remain open, but without regularly scheduled hours. Instead, we’re hoping to fill the calendar with meetings and other events of interest to Democrats. Do you have a group that’s focused on community needs and policy, or information you want to share with fellow Dems? Please share your ideas!
  • LaHoma Romocki has resumed her elected position as Chair of the Granville Dems, and Jim is back as 1st Vice Chair. Note that our two-year term will end in April 2019, when we will gather to elect a new Executive Committee. Would you (or someone you know) be willing to play a key role in this important building year?
  • During the recent election, our poll greeters showed the power of organized precincts to bring help and resources right where we need them. Now it’s back to organizing as many precincts as we can, so that we can educate and motivate Democrats throughout the county in 2020.

2018 election recap and appreciation

Fellow Granville Democrats, it’s been my privilege to serve as your acting chair during this 2018 election season. After months of organizing and preparation, the NC Dems have succeeded in breaking the Republican supermajority in the NC legislature! This marks a turning point in stopping one-party rule in Raleigh and restoring free and fair elections.

We also lost some important races, but we fought hard for them. I’m extremely proud of all the work we’ve done. There are too many people to thank individually here, but here are some of the more prominent roles you played:

  • the Executive Committee who steered the ship and faithfully kept the books;
  • our summer interns who helped to reach out and register new voters;
  • the event planners who raised our visibility in the community and made our Unity Dinner such a success;
  • the fundraisers and donors who helped us to establish a working headquarters;
  • the office staff who kept things up and running;
  • the organizers who wrangled a large and changing volunteer workforce;
  • the canvassers (some from across NC) who tirelessly knocked on doors, made phone calls, educated and inspired their fellow Democrats;
  • our precinct chairs who helped to share the load;
  • the poll greeters who guided voters to our endorsed candidates;
  • the Election Day poll observers who kept a sharp eye out for problems;
  • and of course, our Democratic candidates who worked tirelessly, showed up in
    more places than I can count, and inspired all of our efforts.

Now it’s time to catch our breath, document the lessons learned, and think about how we can stay engaged in the “off years” ahead. (By now, I hope we agree that there’s no such thing as an off year.) We need to stay engaged in local government and in service to our neighbors. I’ll have much more to say about that in a future post, but for now, let’s celebrate all that we’ve built and accomplished in 2018.

Last chance to get out the vote!

Granville Democrats, please help us get out the vote! Let’s support our terrific Democratic candidates including Darryl Moss, LaHoma Romocki, and Judge Carolyn Thompson.

Elections matter hugely — and, as you know, are often decided by just a few votes. Canvassing is the single most effective way to get voters to the polls. We knock on friendly doors to encourage Democratic voters, and let them know when, where and how to vote.

Please join us! We will always send you out with a partner. Families are very welcome. Children of all ages enjoy it and are really a help!

Meeting place: 1655 Pope Road, Creedmoor 27522

Saturday, Sunday, Monday (Nov. 3-5):
Canvass at 1pm and 3pm

Tuesday, Nov 6 is Election Day!

Thanks to our volunteer events team!

When you visit local gatherings and festivals, keep an eye out for Granville Dems. We’re out registering voters and sharing information about candidates and the Democratic platform. Below are some pictures of our volunteers at the recent NC Hot Sauce Festival.

Watch the calendar for other upcoming events, including some that were postponed due to Hurricane Florence! And we can always use more volunteers, so let us know if you’re interested.
